Blossom

Blossom is a suspended sculpture that captures the intricate layering and transformative power of Washington DC’s springtime cherry blossoms. One hundred sixty-seven individual aluminum hexagonal frames are fastened together to form an undulating canopy.

The sculpture’s organic form, texture, and color create a distinct building identity that animates the entry space, resulting in a new focal element for the building and the district.

The hexagonal volume was chosen as a nod to the beautiful yet precise geometric formation of flowering cherry blossoms. The aluminum pieces are painted with a multi-coat reflective champagne gold color to soften the design, allow it to glisten slightly in the sun, and reflect ambient light at night.
